A few major notable trend on the runway this first NYFW back for the Spring/ Summer 2022 are as follows:
- Lavender Hues
Subtly floral, delicately soothing, and mysterious, this softened purple hue certainly stood out on the runways this past NYFW. “Lavender means relaxation and promotes self-care,” notes Tiffany Brown of Tiffany Brown Designs, whose collection called “Lavender” responsibly lived up to its title. Allegedly selecting the color to combat the stresses and fiery nature of recent events, her magnetizing line featuring over 50 shades of lavender on both men and women were inexplicably mollifying. Monochromatically established, the designs were left with plenty of textile freedom: Tulle, cotton, lace. Furthermore, pairing ski masks with sweat pants and sneakers, hoodies with dresses, and suit jackets with maxi ballerina skirts never seemed outlandish or out of place. R&B duo JNA performing “Heavy Weapons” at the show further spiced things up. Androgynous yet pivotally feminine, Brown’s SS22 collection was breathable yet elegant—wearable yet stylish. Seasonally ascribing to a signature color, Brown has carved a unique niche for herself in the market. She hypnotizes viewers with the gamut of possibilities contained within a single hue and leaves them anticipating for more.
- Avante-Garde Athleisure
There’s nothing more refreshing than a new, fashionable take on athletic wear, after a year and half in loungewear and pajamas. Chucks Collins’ TASOU collection, acronym for The Athletic Side Of Us, is a sustainable lifestyle brand that merges fashionable trends with the versatility and comfort of the dynamic individual. Infusing avant-garde into athletic wear, designs include neon cut-out bodysuits, graffiti-laden blazers, orange geometric details, and LGBTQ-friendly androgynous motifs; individuality elevates comfort to bold, edgy streetwear. Hailing from Benin Nigeria, Collins reconciles the sleek modern silhouettes of NYC with the ancient fractals and colors of his homeland. Human beings are ever evolving and require clothing and accessories that connect them to the world. Activewear should neither confine one to the gym, nor be limited by one’s daily tasks; TASOU comprehends this, and masterfully vanquishes borders by glamorizing athleisure.
- Blend of the East and the West
There’s a new trend of blending with the freedom and expressiveness of the western women with the tailored wisdom of the eastern one. A few designers at the Nolcha show illuminated this powerful integration: 5th Season and KavenLiu Dimor. The 5th Season emphasized a new bodily concept inspired by the bird, emblematic of liberty, elegance and renewal. Feathered sleeves, loosened waists, and fresh contemporary fabrics and textures reveal a vanquishing of structural limitations. In parallel is Kaven Liu Dimor’s SS22 collection, which draws its aesthetics from architecture. Evoking the contour and majesty of buildings, while softening their toughness with particular fabrics, Liu incorporates modern retro features from the 80’s and 90’s to elucidate the independent consciousness of the modern, sleek silhouetted woman.
